Block overhead heat and glare without a ladder - one tap or one voice command.
Colorado Sun Pours In - Until Now
Skylights are beautiful - until July, when the afternoon sun turns your living room into a greenhouse. Colorado's high-altitude sun is among the most intense in the country, and an uncovered skylight delivers that intensity directly overhead, where it's hardest to block with furniture or curtains.
A motorized skylight shade solves the problem completely. One tap, one voice command, or a pre-programmed schedule lowers a cellular or solar screen shade over the glass - blocking heat gain, cutting UV, and letting you sleep in on bright summer mornings. No ladder. No reaching. No waking up at 6 a.m. to glare.
Peter or Bri will visit your home, measure your skylight precisely, and recommend the right fabric and motor for how you actually use the space.
Frequently asked questions
Can any skylight have a motorized shade installed?
Most fixed and vented skylights - including standard rectangular Velux, Andersen, and Marvin units - can accept a motorized shade. We measure the skylight opening precisely and source a shade built for your exact model. Specialty shapes (trapezoids, triangles, polygons) may have limited options; we'll tell you honestly what's available during your in-home estimate.
How does a motorized skylight shade get power?
The most common installation uses a rechargeable lithium battery motor built into the shade tube. No electrician is needed - the motor charges via a magnetic USB cable a few times per year. For new construction or remodel projects, we can coordinate with your electrician to hardwire a 110 V AC motor instead, which eliminates battery maintenance entirely.
What's the best fabric for a skylight shade in Colorado?
Cellular shades are one option for skylights and overhead windows. The effect on heat, light, and comfort depends on the glazing, selected shade, orientation, and installation. Solar screen roller fabrics offer another option for filtering sunlight while preserving some outward visibility.
Can I control a skylight shade with my phone or voice?
App and voice control are available with compatible motor and controller combinations. Platform support varies by motor, radio protocol, and hub; it is not included out of the box with every motor. We confirm compatibility and any required bridge before ordering, then show you how to use the controls.
How do I recharge the motor battery, and how often?
Recharging takes 2-4 hours using a magnetic USB or barrel-connector cable that attaches directly to the headrail - there's no need to remove the shade from the skylight. Most rechargeable motors need charging once or twice a year depending on use frequency. The motor sends a low-battery alert to your remote, app, or smart home hub before the battery is depleted, so you're never caught off guard.
Do you also install manual (non-motorized) skylight shades?
For most skylights - especially those in high ceilings or above staircases - motorization is the only practical option. Manual skylight shades require a reach pole or dedicated pull cord, which works for lower vaulted ceilings but is awkward for anything more than 10 feet up. We'll evaluate your skylight during the in-home estimate and give you an honest recommendation.
